PARIS IS BURNING (1990)
Enter the world of Harlem drag balls in the 80's... and find yourself in one of these havens.
Welcome to Paris is Burning.
These Harlem-based drag balls allowed you to be yourself. They were a place that laid the foundations for Voguing, a style of dance that Madonna would later coin. In the 1990 documentary, Paris is Burning, we as an audience are given a closer glimpse into the everyday life that existed in New York City for transgendered individuals who chose to express themselves through style and stride. Though seemingly glamorous, the everyday lives for these people came with it's underlying hardships and struggles.
Throughout the documentary...
we meet people who have completely left their previous lives to begin new ones. One of these brave individuals is Venus Xtravaganza. An Italian Staten Island native, we can't help but feel for her as she concludes that being a "spoiled, rich, white girl" would lead to happiness. I won't tell you what happens to her, but feel free to check out Paris is Burning on Netflix.
